Does Your Dog Have a Dog Food Allergy?

Dog Allergies Symptoms

It is estimated that about ten percent of all allergies seen in dogs and cats are caused by food. After flea bite allergies, food allergies are the third most common cause. People seem to think that by introducing a lamb and rice diet, they are preventing or treating a dog food allergy. Nothing could be farther from the truth.

Dog Allergies Symptoms

Food allergies can affect animals of both genders male and female, whether they have been neutered or spayed or are intact makes no difference. There is no specific age for an allergy to appear. They can show as early as five months and as late as twelve years of age. Generally, the vast majority of these symptoms occur between two and six years of age.

Dog Allergies Symptoms

There is a difference between food intolerance and food allergy. The latter is a true allergy with symptoms of skin problems and constant itching both associated with canine and feline allergies. The symptoms for food allergy is different and this can result in the animal vomiting or having diarrhea. This, to the owner, may not appear to be a typical allergic reaction. Choosing a diet for your pet that is free from offending agents can eliminate both food intolerance and food allergy.

Dog Allergies Symptoms

Through various studies, it has been acknowledged that some ingredients are more likely to cause a dog food allergy than others. The most common offenders for dogs are dairy products, beef, wheat, eggs, chicken, soy and corn. These are the common ingredients in dog foods and they are the most common offenders for allergies. Many pet foods for years have had ingredients of chicken, beef, wheat and corn. It was because of these allergies that several companies decided to produce a lamb and rice diet.

This diet of lamb and rice was nothing to be perceived as special apart from the two ingredients had never normally been present in pet foods. It is possible because the animals had never eaten rice and lamb before that it is not sure if they are allergic to this combination of food. If lamb and rice are to be the main ingredients in pet food, it may become apparent that the combination of these two will be responsible for food allergy. There are many other ingredients other than lamb and rice; this alone may be hard to detect if this is the cause of food allergy.

It can sometimes be hard to detect if your dog has a dog food allergy as symptoms can be similar to most other allergies seen in dogs. The most common sign is itchy skin; this may include recurring ear infections, excessive scratching, hair loss, hot spots and skin infections. These can be treated using antibiotics but can often reoccur after the treatment has finished. Dogs with food allergies sometimes have increased bowel movements, studies have showed a non-allergic dog has 1.5 bowel movement a day as opposed to a dog with food allergy possibly going three or more times a day.

The Itchy Dog: is it an Allergy?

Dog Allergies Symptoms

Scratching is a very common symptom in dogs, and should not be the owner and ask them to nip in the bud causing early goal in itself, a secondary trauma to your dog. But before this could be your dog is allergic to preclude the common parasites (fleas and mites), (hot spots) of bacteria and fungi (ringworm and yeast) infections. See my article is the scratching your dog to explore these in more detail.

Dog Allergies Symptoms

Also> Allergies are more common in children these days there are several generations, vets see a lot more allergies in animals. It 'hard to explain this phenomenon, theories range from changes in the content of the diet, the use of detergents for the modern home or simply genetic evolution. One thing is certain, whatever the cause, allergic dogs benefit greatly to avoid the allergen in question or, if this is not possible, adequateTreatment to minimize the itching.

Dog Allergies Symptoms

We begin with the presentation of symptoms in allergic dogs. The itching can occur not only as obvious scratches on the neck and sides, but also to rub your face, foot licking or chewing and care. Licking feet, for example, is often perceived by owners as normal, when in fact the dog is moving in the way only he can answer to lick. The skin between the toes can become red and painful obsessionLick and white dogs such as the West Highland White Terrier and Bichon Frise fur is dyed brown by saliva.

Dog Allergies Symptoms

Ear infections are another common sign of an underlying allergy. Although generally bloom, the hairs in the ear canal, the lack of ventilation, bacteria and yeast may trigger the infection, allergy to behind this is often the cause of the itching. If your dog gets recurrent ear infections may be an underlying allergy to preventYour dog is itching on the emerging and developing, adult ear infections.

What are the most common allergy in dogs?

For simplicity, are best divided into four categories.

1) hypersensitivity to flea bites

2) Adverse reactions to food components

3) The atopic eczema

Contact dermatitis 4)

Hypersensitivity to flea bites is relatively easy to cure. This is a simple case of eliminating every single chip on the dog andcrucially, in his/her environment. The itchiness is caused by an allergic reaction to the flea saliva, and so even a solitary flea can trigger a scratching frenzy. To rule out flea bite hypersensitivity, all animals in the house (dogs and cats) should be treated with a reputable veterinary spot on medication monthly without fail, and the house should be thoroughly sprayed with an insecticidal spray.

Adverse food reactions are more difficult to treat as it can be difficult to isolate the precise ingredient responsible for causing itchiness in your dog. Not only that, treating adverse food reactions requires owners to be exceptionally disciplined and motivated in preventing their pet having even a single treat unless the exact ingredients are known to be safe.

There are two ways of diagnosing an adverse food reaction (also known as a food allergy). For those readers for whom cost is not an issue, a blood test can be done to measure for ingredient specific antibodies in the bloodstream. The blood test is quite costly, and if combined with a blood test for environmental allergens is usually upwards of 0 (?200). The company performing the blood test then provides a list of ingredients (chicken, beef, pork, rice, wheat etc) and a score next to them, suggesting which ingredients are best avoided. The owner then picks a commercial diet which does not include any of these ingredients, or indeed a special home cooked diet. The second way to diagnose an adverse food reaction is to conduct a dietary trial. This involves picking a very bland hypoallergenic diet and feeding your dog exclusively that for at least a month, preferably 6 weeks. The author usually suggests turkey and rice, as less dogs are allergic to turkey than chicken. Of course if your dog happened to be allergic to rice or turkey, which is rare but nevertheless possible, you would be none the wiser as the itchiness would continue and you would assume you had ruled out a food allergy having done the turkey and rice dietary trial. Remember if you are doing one of these trials, then your dog must not be given any treats, especially not pigs ears, chews, boneos, dental sticks or any rawhide products. Literally nothing must be swallowed other than turkey and rice (and water!) for the entire trial period.

If you have ruled out flea bite hypersensitivity and ruled out an adverse food reaction, the next step is to consider an environmental allergy, also known as atopic dermatitis. Symptoms of atopic dermatitis usually begin between 1 and 3 years of age, though any age is possible. The itchiness is often seasonal, which is consistent with a pollen allergy, though some dogs are itchy all year round. There are certain breeds which are predisposed to this condition: Boxers, Bull Terriers, Dalmations, English Bulldogs, German Shepherd Dogs, Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, Shar Peis, Shih Tzus and West Highland White Terriers being the most commonly affected. Diagnosis is usually made based on the history and ruling out all the other causes of itchiness, and many vets will treat the condition on these presumptions. However, definitive diagnosis can be achieved via a panel of injections into a patch of skin, or blood tests. Neither of these are particularly effective and generally not performed unless the owner is prepared to attempt a desensitization programme. This involves a long term course of injections given by your vet on, say, a monthly basis to desensitize your dog to the offending allergen, and so make the allergic reaction much smaller when he/she does come into contact with it.

Contact dermatitis is a skin reaction caused by your dog coming into contact with a chemical that is an irritant. It therefore only tends to affect the stomach, groin and feet of the dog, and is characterized by reddening and drying of the skin in these areas. It can also be seen when owners shampoo their dogs with a product that is not intended for use in dogs. Contact dermatitis is rare, but easily ruled out by careful use of cleaning products around the household. Just think, did the itchiness coincide with the introduction of a new carpet cleaner, washing powder or fabric softener?

By far the best treatment for any allergy is avoidance of the cause. By careful investigation and following the steps above this is often possible, especially for flea bite hypersensitivity, adverse food reactions and contact dermatitis. If avoidance is impossible though, as is the case for many cases of atopic dermatitis, then seasonal or lifelong treatment may be indicated. Steroids are very effective at stopping itchiness caused by allergies, but long term use can lead to undesirable side effects, such as adrenal gland disease. Long term steroid use should only be used as a last resort, when other medications have been tried and failed. These other medications include antihistamines, essential fatty acids and medicated shampoos.

Dog Illness Symptoms - Learn When Your Dog Needs Help

Dog Allergies Symptoms

A dog's illness symptoms vary from one environment to the other. It may be perfectly acceptable that your cuddly Pekingese wants to lay around by your side all the time, but this may be a warning signal if somebody else's generally active Pekingese is behaving this way towards them. The key to recognizing illness symptoms in dogs is to pay attention to them and see if they are doing unusual things that are out of character. Many dog illnesses symptoms become obvious when you start to look for them.

Dog Allergies Symptoms

Of course, dogs are always full of surprises, but you should be able to tell the difference in a happy surprise and one that may be a dog Parvo virus symptom or other debilitating dog illness.

Dog Allergies Symptoms

The first indication of a dog being sick is they are lethargic or seem exhausted or sleepy in an abnormal way. Is the dog just laying there and refusing to interact with you? When you coax him to walk, does he give it a go and then stop? Is he limping? Is he persistently licking a certain spot on his body? Is he having loose or uncontrollable stool? These are all symptoms of dog illnesses.

Dog Allergies Symptoms

Did you take his temperature? You can quickly take his temperature with an ear thermometer to see if he is too hot. When using the ear thermometer you must make sure to insert it properly so that it will read his internal temperature. You cannot just feel his forehead like you do a human to make a guess of it, you have to get the reading from the inside. You need an accurate internal temperature. Oral and Rectal mercury thermometer readings are fine too, in fact, rectal is probably the recommended choice. However, you may need some assistance with the task.

Your dog's temperature should not be more than 102 degrees Fahrenheit or 39 Celsius. A fever in your dog is an illness symptom and should be tended to immediately, particularly if there are other symptoms accompanying it. Fever is present in many dog illnesses such as deadly dog Parvo virus, Lyme disease, pneumonia, and other infectious diseases. Many owners of Big Dogs will often treat a dog's fever with human aspirin. This is only recommended after you've discussed it with the veterinarian. This is not recommended for small dogs. You should never give your dog Tylenol or Motrin or the generic equivalents.

Why is the dog scratching and licking himself so much? What do these illness symptoms indicate? He may have dermatitis, scabies, ringworm, fleas, ticks, or mites. Possibly it might be that he may only be grooming himself to look pretty for his master. When your dog has been spayed or neutered, you may see an increase in his grooming regimen because he will now have more time for it.

It is possible that the dog can have allergies. This will vary with dogs of all shape and style. Most allergies can be treated inexpensively with the guidance of your animal doctor. This may include dietary supplements, changes to environment, or a cream or spray that you can apply to the dog.

Help, My Dog is Urinating Blood! Tips on Treating and Curing Painful Urination in Your Dog

Dog Allergies Symptoms

My neighbor was scared to death. He noticed her dog urinating blood so she took him to the hospital veterinarian immediately. The vet told her a urinary tract infection was to blame and prescribed her dog some antibiotics. In fact, the infection went away quickly with the drug, and then the blood. The problem is that this is the umpteenth time that their dog to the vet because he had the same problem. It turns out that medicine is not a panacea and does not removethe symptoms.

Dog Allergies Symptoms

If your dog is urinating blood, urinary tract infection is most likely the cause. Your dog's bladder, urethra or kidneys can become infected. Small stones or crystals gather and scratch your dog's urethra, causing bleeding.

Dog Allergies Symptoms

If you see your dog urinating blood, your first reaction will most likely panic. While it is important that immediate action by the veterinarian and always taking a correct diagnosis, theseis a fairly common problem that can be treated easily at home so there's no need to go off the deep end. First, rule out any serious problems that may be bringing on the bleeding, such as tumors or bladder stones.

Dog Allergies Symptoms

If your dog is urinating blood and the cause is merely a bacterial infection, your veterinarian will most likely prescribe your dog a round of antibiotics. While antibiotics are effective in temporarily relieving your dog of the symptoms of a bladder infection, they don't get to the root of the problem. In order to keep an infection from returning, it's important to address all lifestyle factors that can lead to recurrent infections.

The most common causes of recurrent infections are an unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, and insufficient intake of fresh, clean water. Dogs that eat a lot of processed food are at risk. Feed your dog nutritional food that is raw and unprocessed as much as possible. Also avoid giving your dog tap water and instead give him fresh, filtered water so he can detoxify more effectively. Take your dog out on at least two walks per day so he has enough opportunities to empty his bladder. Holding urine in too long can lead to your dog urinating blood.

For the best results, give your dog a homeopathic treatment on a regular basis in addition to making these important lifestyle changes. Homeopathic remedies are beneficial because they can be used for long periods without causing any side effects and they help to treat and prevent urinary tract infection at the same time. In sum, you can kill two birds with one stone by administering a homeopathic remedy. Most likely your dog is urinating blood repeatedly because of an underlying imbalance that needs to be corrected.

So there you have it. While conventional treatment suppresses symptoms and stops the bleeding for a time, it does not get to the root of the problem. If you want to see your dog achieve permanent recovery so you can stop making repeated visits to the vet, make improvements to your dog's lifestyle and administer homeopathic treatment. By doing so, you won't ever have to worry about seeing your dog urinating blood ever again.
