Dust mites are ubiquitous in our household dwellings despite our levels of cleaning and hygiene. There are ways we can limit the build up of these mites and reduce exposure of our pets if they have allergic skin disease.

i) It has been proven that foam bedding is infested with dust mites after 12 months. Throw away bedding and buy new bedding every six months. Synthetic bedding may be a suitable alternative unless you prefer natural bedding.

ii) Don't let your dog sleep on your bed. Mites accumulate in human mattresses and pillows in very high numbers.

iii) Don't let your dog sleep under your bed or under the house.
iv) The laundry is a low dust mite environment. This is a great place for atopic dogs to sleep.
v) Vacuum your carpets regularly. Throw away old rugs.
vi) Wash bedding, rugs carpets etc in eucalyptus oil by adding eucalyptus oil to the wash. Eucalyptus oil kills the mites.
vii) Do not apply directly to your dog's skin, even in dilute form.
By reducing the numbers in your house you can limit exposure to your atopic dog. The laundry is often tiled and cleaned and mopped frequently and is an area of very low dust and dust mite accumulation. This is an absolutely perfect place for your dog to sleep.
Skin prick tests and blood tests are the only way of determining whether your dog is allergic to dust mites
The symptoms of this allergy are red rashes on the abdomen, groin and arm pit area. The feet are usually itchy and the dog licks them constantly. Redness of the ear and constant ear infection is a feature.
